Why convert a PDF to MusicXML
A PDF is a picture of a score; MusicXML is the score itself — every note, rest, key, time signature and part, in a format notation programs share. Converting lets you transpose a part, fix a typo, change the layout, extract one instrument, or import the music into practice and accompaniment apps.
How Musaica converts PDF to MusicXML
Musaica is a free online sheet music reader, and MusicXML is how it stores every score. When you upload a PDF, the Audiveris optical music recognition engine reads each page and produces MusicXML, which Musaica engraves and plays in the browser. Listening is the fastest way to check a conversion: a wrong rhythm or a missing accidental is far easier to hear than to spot.
What is free and what is not. Converting, viewing and playing are free (a free account unlocks full scores). Downloading the MusicXML file is part of Musaica Basic, $5.99/month, which also removes ads and adds Smart Playback, Band Mode and HD audio renders. If you only need MusicXML occasionally and don't need playback, the free Audiveris desktop app produces MusicXML too.
Getting a clean conversion
- Start from the best source. A PDF exported from notation software converts almost perfectly; a third-generation photocopy does not.
- Check the opening. If the clef, key or time signature in the first bar is wrong, everything after it will be too — re-scan before you go further.
- Listen through once. Follow the cursor and note any bars that sound wrong; fix them in your notation program after export.
- Expect to tidy lyrics, chord symbols, ornaments and dynamics — OMR may drop them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a PDF to MusicXML?
Use optical music recognition. Upload the PDF to Musaica (or open it in Audiveris), let it recognise the notation, check the result, and export MusicXML.
Is PDF to MusicXML conversion free on Musaica?
Conversion, viewing and playback are free. Downloading the MusicXML file requires Musaica Basic ($5.99/month).
Can I open the MusicXML in MuseScore?
Yes. MusicXML opens in MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, Dorico and most notation and practice apps.
Can I convert PDF to MIDI?
Musaica does not export MIDI. Export MusicXML and open it in a notation program such as MuseScore, which can save MIDI.
Why does my MusicXML have mistakes?
OMR is not perfect: blurry scans, grace notes, tuplets and clef changes cause most errors. A cleaner source PDF fixes the majority.
